Smarter pricing experiments for airlines

Running a pricing experiment at an airline sounds straightforward. Assign some routes to a new pricing policy, keep others as a control, and measure the difference. In practice, it rarely works that cleanly.

The problem with route-level experiments

When you assign entire routes to treatment or control, you inherit everything that makes those routes different from each other. Persistent differences in passenger mix, seasonality, and demand patterns add noise and inflate uncertainty. On top of that, airline demand is strongly autocorrelated — today’s bookings are correlated with yesterday’s, making your observations far less independent than a standard experiment assumes. The result: experiments that need to run for months, close to a year, or become infeasible altogether — and business decisions that cannot wait.

Turning time into an advantage

Instead of permanently assigning a route to treatment or control, each route alternates between the two on a fixed schedule — a switchback design. Because the same route is now its own control at a different point in time, persistent route-level differences cancel out. Slowly moving demand shocks have less time to accumulate and distort the comparison. The trick is getting the cadence right. We tested both weekly and daily switching on LATAM’s ancillary pricing data, carefully navigating the trade-off between variance reduction and carry-over contamination.

What we found

Switchback designs reduced standard errors by up to 67% compared to standard route assignment — confidence intervals roughly half the width for the same amount of data. Experiments that would have required months to reach a reliable conclusion could now deliver results within a commercially realistic window. Daily switching offered the largest gains early on; weekly switching remained a strong and simpler alternative.

What this changes

For airlines testing pricing policies or ancillary offers at the route level, the bottleneck is often not data volume but experimental design. The right design can dramatically compress the time between hypothesis and confident answer.
